So apparently Renewal of Evangelion IS true.
The proof being that Gainax has announced it on their website.
For those who can read Japanese and who want to see the proof:
http://www.gainax.co.jp/news/index.html ... onth=12#10
For those who cannot, I will briefly summarise the article:
Renewal of Evangelion is to celebrate the
10-year anniversary of Evangelion. It will last for one year, starting from December 2002 and lasting until December 2003. Gainax, together with King Records, Kadokawa Publishing, Sega, MOVIC and Bandai form the Renewal of Evangelion Project Team, and they will start the Evangelion Renewal Project.
Kicking off the project is the release of Volume 1 of Gainax's Print Software: Shin Seiki Evangelion on 6th December 2002. Next up is the long-awaited volume 8 of the Evangelion manga by Kadokawa Publishing on 19th December 2002. The sequel to Girlfriend of Steel, Girlfriend of Steel 2, is expected to be out next spring. Bandai is set to release a metallic-plated version of Evangelion-01 in April, while UFO plushies will be released by Saga. [For your information, the most hyped ones mentioned on Gainax's page are Rei and Asuka in wedding dresses. ^^;;]
Action figures of the Mass Production Series, Eva-05 to Eva-13 and the movie version of Evangelion-02 will be released by Kaiyodo in February.
As for the music section, there will be a CD single released containing Zankoku na Tenshi no TEEZE, Fly Me To The Moon and their respective off-vocals. A best-of compilation album will be released on 21st May, and an unnamed album [so far] on 25th June.
The DVD releases are as follows:

PS. The weird thing is, some time ago I dreamt about King Records releasing a Eva single with Zankoku, FMTTM and their off-vocals. When I woke up, I created the Winamp playlist.

"Renewal of Evangelion" release by Gainax
"The Second Coming" has been announced! In Newtype's upcoming article no Evangelion, the release of several new Eva products in Japan will be released.
In the first half of 2003, Gainax will release a new series of Super-Deformed UFO Catcher Dolls in monthly sets. In March a new CD will be released containing new versions of the "Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis" opening and "Fly me to the Moon" ending themes, along with another (no Super Deformed) series of action figures. In April, two versions of the sequel to "Kotetsu no Girlfriend" (Girlfriend of Steel) will be available for PC.
The most important announcement, however, is "Renewal of Evangelion", a DVD release of the entire TV series. Each disc will include remastered video and Dolby 5.1 audio. The first two DVDs, along with an exclusive art-box for the entire series, will be available in June 2003.
